Well, here are some of the most vivid accounts of paranormal activity in the Winchester Mystery House, courtesy of the estate itself ![]() The inside of the house is pretty baffling, but the outside garden areas are home to some curious things as well, including a $20,000 English Yew tree that towers over 12,000 boxwood hedges, 1,500 major plants, shrubs, trees - and even greenery called Monkey Puzzle, which is native to Chile. Winchester has a Guinness World Record for the longest continuous house construction - 38 years! The only time work slowed down was after the 1906 Earthquake rocked the estate and the Bay Area causing damage that is still visible in the home today. I only wish there were more books about this fascinating mansion.TIME Magazine has ranked the South Bay attraction among the Top 10 Most Haunted Places alongside the likes of The Amityville House and The Tower of London. Stairways lead to the ceiling, doors open to nowhere. What could possibly have been motivating Sarah Winchester to build the world's most bizarre house? This book has plenty of theories and info. It's stunningly beautiful and creepy at the same time. The mansion has 160 rooms, 2,000 doors, 47 fireplaces, 13 bathrooms, and 6 kitchens. The Winchester Mystery house is a marvel of architecture and a really fun place for visitors who like to visit supposedly haunted places. Constant restoration keeps the house from declining further, but some of those rooms that were destroyed will be kept that way in order for visitors to see what the house looked like when Sarah lived there after the earthquake. ![]() The destruction to the house can still be seen today, and its heartbreaking. It's said that it took the servants hours to find her because she never slept in the same bedroom twice in order to confuse the spirits. The 1906 earthquake destroyed large portions of the house, and trapped Sarah in one of her bedrooms. During her lifetime the house sat on 161 acres of land, and eventually reached 7 stories tall. We may never really now Sarah's motivations, but the house is proof that she wasn't really using her vast inheritance in the traditional manner. For the remaining 38 years of her life, construction on her mansion never once ceased until the day of her death in 1922. So apparently that's exactly what she did. She had to continue construction on the house 24/7 every day of her life in order to keep the spirits appeased. The medium supposedly told her this was true, and that she needed to move west and build a house. Very little is known about Sarah Winchester and why she moved to California. This book is a slim volume they sell in the gift shop. Visiting this house has been on my bucket list for a long time. We were exhausted, but I couldn't have been happier. I think we ended up staying at the house for about 4 hours because we took 2 tours, and then we had to drive back through San Francisco during rush hour traffic to get to our hotel. We had to get up at 4:30 am for a ridiculously early 5 hour flight, and then drive an hour from the airport to San Jose. That's how much I wanted to see this house. Recently I was in San Francisco for Thanksgiving, and my husband and I decided to take a detour to San Jose on the day we flew out just to visit the Winchester House.
